Why does KBC offer this app?

KBC DriveSafe compliments our range for younger drivers, supporting those giving them driving instruction (like their parents) and helping the young drivers to get through their driving test and safely onto the road.

We put health, safety and accident prevention first at KBC Insurance, so we see this app as another way in which we try to do our bit for society.

Who is the app intended for?

DriveSafe is aimed at young drivers who have just got their driving licence. Our statistics show that inexperienced drivers have a greater chance of having an accident. Our DriveSafe app alerts them to how they're driving, giving them feedback and tips to help them become better drivers. They can share general details of their driving with a coach like one of their parents, facilitating discussion on and encouraging safe driving (helping parents rest a little easier).

General topics

I've forgotten my username. What should I do?

If you're logged out and can't remember your username, don't worry. Your username is given in the website profile settings for your coach, if you have one. If you don't have coach, register again with a new username.

I've forgotten my password. What should I do?

This won't be a problem if you're logged in. If you're logged out, tap 'Need help?' in the app's login screen to reset your password using your username and a security question.

What are telematics?

Telematics is a new kind of technology that combines telecommunications and informatics for many innovative purposes. We use telematics in our DriveSafe smartphone app, which uses things like your location to assess your driving in terms of speed control, eco-driving and undistracted driving skills (the latter being based on whether you use your phone while driving).

Are there conditions for using DriveSafe?

No. Anyone can install DriveSafe from their app store (currently only available from Google Play or iTunes).

Does the app use a lot of battery?

Battery use will depend on your phone's GPS. If it doesn't use much battery, DriveSafe won't either. If it does, we recommend switching off 'Auto-start journey' in your settings.

Does the app use a lot of data?

No. A data connection is only required for uploading journey data after you've been driving. You can ensure that only a Wi-Fi connection will be used to do this in your 'Data upload connection' settings.

On what kinds of devices can the app be installed?

KBC DriveSafe is available for:

  • Android- smartphones: versions 4 and 5
  • iOS (iPhone): versions 8, 9 and 10

We also plan to release a version for Android 6 later in the autumn.

What do I need to watch out for when registering?

Once you've registered and logged into the app, you'll be sent a message containing a PIN and link to our website for coaches (like your parents). You can share this with your coach so they can log in and see things you share with them there (only they can see this information).

Make sure your phone's GPS is switched on while you're driving. Here's how:

  • Android: Settings > Location: switch this on and select 'High accuracy' under 'Mode'.
  • iOS: Settings > DriveSafe: select ‘Always’ under 'Location services'.

Always make sure that your smartphone is visible in your car for a good GPS signal. A data connection is not required while driving.

If you are an iOS user and use the 'auto-start' feature, make sure that KBC DriveSafe is running in the background. To check this, double-tap the home button and the DriveSafe app should be displayed among the opened apps.

What should I look out for when I'm going to drive?

Make sure your phone's GPS is switched on while you're driving. Here's how:

  • Android: Settings > Location: switch this on and select 'High accuracy' under 'Mode'
  • iOS: Settings > DriveSafe: select ‘Always’ under 'Location services'

Always make sure that your smartphone is visible in your car for a good GPS signal. Check that your smartphone has enough battery power. If it is under 15%, a journey won't usually be saved. A data connection is not required while driving.

If you are an iOS user and use the 'auto-start' feature, make sure that KBC DriveSafe is running in the background. To check this, double-tap the home button and the DriveSafe app should be displayed among the opened apps.

How do I add a coach?

Once you've registered and logged into the app, you'll be sent a message containing a PIN and link to our website for coaches (like your parents). You can share this with your coach so they can log in and register at drivesafe.kbc.be

Details

What data is collected?

We ask you for your age, sex, username and password. In order to give you feedback on your driving, we measure the distance you drive and how long it takes you, the number of times you brake or accelerate harshly, your location, your speed, the number of incoming and outgoing phone calls on your phone and (for Android only) how many text messages you send and receive per journey. If you use an iOS device, the number of incoming and outgoing phone calls will be measured but not the number of text messages sent and received per journey.

Data is processed anonymously and the app doesn't tell us who is using it.

What's done with the data collected?

Data is processed anonymously and the app doesn't tell us who is using it. We only use collected data to tell you how you're driving and for anonymised statistical analysis. This is with the aim of learning what makes a good driver and improving our safe driving tips. We will never share this data with third parties.

Where is data stored?

Data is stored securely in the cloud (Amazon Frankfurt). We also store it internally for five years for statistical and general analysis purposes.

For how long is data stored?

Data is stored securely in the cloud (Amazon Frankfurt) for a year. We also store it internally for five years.

Will my data ever be linked to insurance premiums or certain benefits?

We will never link KBC DriveSafe data to insurance you have with us. Data is processed anonymously and the app doesn't tell us who is using it.

Does the app collect data when it's running in the background?

Journeys can be stopped and started manually or automatically. Auto-starting journeys can be enabled in your settings, causing the app to run in the background. When the app detects certain speeds, it records this. You can indicate afterwards whether you were actually driving at the time.

Auto-starting journeys may not work so well on lower-end phones. You can troubleshoot this by unlocking your phone before you start driving. Another option is to manually press the start button.

What information does my coach see?

Your coach only sees general details of your driving. They don't see where you've been driving, but do get to see details of your driving scores and how long your journeys take.

How are my details protected?

You can exercise your right to access, correct or remove data by e-mailing our helpdesk, who you can also contact if you prefer us not to make future use of the data for statistical and global analysis purposes.

How do I get access to my details, have them deleted or specify that I don't want them used for statistical analysis?

You can exercise your right to access, correct or remove data by e-mailing our helpdesk, who you can also contact if you prefer us not to make future use of the data for statistical and global analysis purposes.

Can app data be used in a claim?

You can't use DriveSafe data as evidence in a claim, nor can it be used as evidence against you.

How do I find out more about KBC DriveSafe?

You might find a quick answer to your questions about DriveSafe in our frequently asked questions, so be sure to take a look at those.

How the app works

What exactly does the app measure and does it also give you driving tips?

The app measures your speed, eco-driving ability and smartphone use while driving to give you an overall score, as well as feedback and useful tips for all your scores.

How is my speed control score calculated?

We compare your speed to the speed limit where you're driving to give you a score for speed control on each journey.

How is my eco-driving score calculated?

We measure G-forces on your smartphone, recording when you brake or accelerate abruptly and thus affecting your eco-driving score.

How is my undistracted driving score calculated?

We measure your mobile phone use (calling and texting) if you are an Android user and your mobile phone use (calling) if you are an iOS user to score you for avoiding distractions while driving.

How is my total score calculated?

This is based on your speed control, eco-driving and undistracted driving scores.

Where can I see my scores?

Drivers can see results in the app for their last journey, all their journeys and their track record, with specific journey details and driving improvement feedback and tips.

Coaches see results online at drivesafe.kbc.be. 'Dashboard' and 'History' display driving results. Coaches only see general driving style details, not where the driver has been driving. They do however get to see driving scores and how long journeys take.

How do I get started as a coach?

Once your driver logs into the app, they're sent a message containing a PIN and link to our website for coaches. They can share this with you so you can log in and register at drivesafe.kbc.be.

Coaches see results online at drivesafe.kbc.be. 'Dashboard' displays driving results. Coaches only see general driving style details, not where the driver has been driving. They do however get to see driving scores and how long journeys take.

A deal can only be made by a coach.

  1. First choose the driving skills that are important to you, then the credits and reward your driver can earn.
  2. Select whether you think 'Speed control', Eco-driving' or 'Undistracted driving' are key to being a good driver. If you opt for speed control, the driver can earn credits by staying within speed limits. If you think eco-driving is important, the driver earns credits by doing things like avoiding overly abrupt acceleration or braking. You can also make undistracted driving (keeping your eyes on the road) count, where the driver earns credits for not using their mobile phone while driving. All of these criteria can be combined.
  3. You can also specify how many credits the driver has to earn to reach their goal. Drivers earn a credit for each perfectly driven kilometre according to your selected criteria.
  4. Give the driver a prize for reaching their goal by entering a reward that they work towards.

How do I make a deal?

Only a coach can make a deal.

How do I start a journey?

You can start a journey manually or automatically. Auto-starting journeys can be enabled in your settings.

Using auto-start causes the app to run in the background. When the app detects certain speeds, it records this. You can indicate afterwards whether you were actually driving at the time. If the app tells you that it thinks that you've started a journey but you're not actually driving, cancel the journey. If you are driving, just ignore the pop-up message. Once the journey is over, you'll need to confirm that you were driving.

A manual start is easy. You just tap ‘Start’ on your dashboard before you set off and ‘Stop’ (also on your dashboard) once you're done driving.

How can I use the app to improve my driving?

DriveSafe gives you lots of feedback on your driving. Just tap on your scores to see how you're doing. Try to keep an eye on and boost your scores and you'll be a great driver in no time!

Can I switch sharing my results with my coach on and off?

Your coach never sees where and when you've been driving. If you don't want them to see your results, you can switch that off in your settings.

How does a coach see their driver's results (once the driver has activated the app)?

Drivers can opt whether to share results with their coach in their settings.

Technical topics

What if I change phones?

You can still use the app if you get another phone, though you can't use it on several different phones at the same time.

Why aren't some of my journeys recorded?

  • KBC DriveSafe uses your phone's GPS sensors and TomTom maps. Certain journeys may not get correctly recorded or recorded due to shortcomings in your phone or TomTom's maps.
  • Be sure to:
  • Switch on your phone's GPS while driving
  • Confirm journeys after driving if you have 'Auto-start journey' switched on in your settings (if you don't have this enabled, you need to indicate when you started and finished driving)
  • Remember that you need a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection to upload recorded journeys (mobile data needs to be selected in your settings if you want to use such a connection)
  • Contact us if you keep having problems at the KBC-Helpdesk

What if I drive abroad?

KBC DriveSafe works fully in the Benelux countries. Outside that area, it can't record when you're speeding.
