What insurance do you need?

An accident can happen anywhere. Sometimes it’s minor and innocent, while at other times it can have far-reaching (financial) consequences, not just for the victim, but also for the person who caused the accident. What insurance do you need to avoid a financial headache? These three forms of insurance protect you against medical expenses and/or material costs following an accident.

How is family insurance different from accident insurance?

While family insurance and accident insurance both help you limit the financial consequences of an accident, the insurance you need depends on the situation.

Family Insurance

Family insurance covers bodily injuries and material damage you or your family members cause to others outside your family.

For example: you cross a bike path and run into a cyclist causing them to fall and hurt their back. Since you are liable, you have to pay the doctor’s and physiotherapist’s fees and the bike repair costs. In this case, a family insurance pays all costs to the victim.

Discover and calculate your family insurance

Accident insurance

Accident insurance covers your medical expenses and, if applicable, those of your family members after an accident.

For example: you’re cycling on a slippery road and fall and hurt your back. After visiting your GP, you go to a physiotherapist for further rehabilitation treatment. In this case, your accident insurance covers the portion of the costs not covered by your health insurance fund.

Accident and family insurance complement each other, and a combination of both ensures you are always protected against (often high) costs after an accident, whether you are the victim or the person who is liable.

How is accident insurance different from hospitalisation insurance?

While accident insurance and hospitalisation insurance both cover the cost of your hospitalisation following an accident, there are some differences between the two types of insurance.

The cases described below are not covered under hospitalisation insurance but are covered under accident insurance.

  • You’re involved in an accident and instead of going to hospital, you visit your GP and, if applicable, a physiotherapist for rehabilitation treatment
  • As a result of an accident, you incur long-term costs, for instance in case of permanent disability or incapacity for work

The case described below is not covered under accident insurance but is covered under hospitalisation insurance.

  • You have not had an accident but are hospitalised for a medical condition, an illness or childbirth. We also cover medical expenses associated with your hospitalisation up to two months before and six months after your hospitalisation.

So, as you can see, accident insurance and hospitalisation insurance complement each other and each have their own benefits. If you’d like to discuss your best options for combining these types of insurance, feel free to get in touch with your KBC Insurance agent. They’ll be more than happy to work out insurance that suits your needs.
