What's the difference between Visa and Mastercard?

You can use a credit card virtually everywhere in Belgium, in other countries and online. In fact, it is more widely accepted abroad than a 'regular' bank card, and that's particularly useful when you're travelling.

When you take out a credit card, additional services like insurance cover are also often provided. Mastercard and Visa are the two best-known credit cards. But which one is better?

Visa or Mastercard?

Visa and Mastercard credit cards are accepted worldwide. The benefits, conditions and costs are set by the banks issuing the cards, which means that the card features vary from bank to bank. Banks usually offer different versions of each card, each with their own specific price and benefits.

Why take out a credit card?

1. Travelling abroad

The difference between Visa and MasterCard

Visa and Mastercard are a widely accepted means of payments in virtually every country in the world. Indeed, they are often easier to use than a regular bank card when you're abroad.

What's more, paying with your credit card in non-EU countries is cheaper than paying with your bank card.

If you are travelling to the US, don't forget to activate your credit card for use there. At KBC, you can do that online in KBC Touch and %%product.mobile%%.

2. Shopping and booking hotels online

Shopping and booking hotels online is easier with a credit card. Not all online stores accept debit cards. In Belgium, you can usually pay in them with your bank card, but sometimes you can only use a Visa or Mastercard credit card in international online stores.

In addition, when travelling abroad, you often need a credit card to book a hotel room or a rental car online

3. Having purchase protection and other insurance cover

When you buy something with your credit card, you are often better protected than when you buy it with your bank card. How well you're covered depends on the features of the credit card you end up going for.

The cover and protection provided is wide-ranging, and includes extended warranty insurance, travel cancellation insurance and online purchase insurance.

4. Having more money on you

A credit card ensures that you have additional money on you at all times, because you buy things on credit. But remember that the amount spent will be deducted from your account the following month.
