What does this job entail?
At KBC we use a number of statistical models that we develop in-house. These cover the domains of credit, markets, finance, asset management and insurance. Often they are used for risk measurement, but also for other purposes. We develop these models with traditional techniques as well as with AI techniques.
As a Model Validator in the domain of credit risk, your core responsibility is to validate models, both qualitatively and quantitatively. You critically assess their design, challenge assumptions, and verify their performance. The result? Stronger, more reliable models that support sound decision-making across the organisation.
What do we expect from you?
- You validate models, independently from a to z.
- You present your findings to model owners, Chief Risk Officers and Chief Financial Officers. Based on your analyses and your knowledge of regulations and business practices you give substantiated answers to the questions ‘Can we use this model? Does it do what it is meant to?’
- You are in frequent contact with colleagues in Belgium and abroad, and sometimes also external parties like auditors and regulators. So you build an interesting network.
- You contribute to discussions regarding methodology.
Your key strengths?

- You have a master’s degree or PhD in (applied) sciences such as economics, mathematics, physics, or engineering. Experience in risk management or finance is a valuable plus, but not required. We’ll provide training and coaching when you start.
- You communicate effectively in English.
- You’re not afraid to ask critical questions and dive deep into challenging topics.
- Giving clear advice on complex issues? No problem for you.
- You like to work independently. Always with respect for deadlines.
- Like your colleagues, you enjoy helping others and are eager to learn on the job.
- You look forward to having an impact on the model landscape of KBC Group.
What can we offer you?
- Teamwork with an international dimension! Collaborating with so many different colleagues makes every day unique and interesting.
- You choose where you work: Brussels, Ghent, or Leuven. These locations are easily accessible by public transport. You can also work from home part of the time, if you prefer.
- In addition to on-the-job learning, we invest in you with an exceptional range of training and development opportunities. You’re encouraged to keep growing—both personally and professionally.
- You’ll receive a permanent contract and a competitive salary. You can also choose from a wide array of extra-legal benefits.
- Thanks to flexible working hours, you can align your work with your personal life.
Can you help us make the difference?
In my role as a model validator, I’m responsible for thoroughly assessing the most important credit risk models at KBC. My background as a mathematician helps me understand the underlying techniques and ask critical questions about their validity. Fortunately, I’m not alone in this, there’s always room for discussion and support from my colleagues!
