Looking for a new challenge, Tim Mertens came across KBC's CV matching tool. He uploaded his CV and was immediately presented with a number of vacancies that were a good match for his background. A few weeks later, his career switch had become a reality.
How did a job at KBC come on to your radar, Tim?
After nine years as an executive in the retail sector, I needed a change. I wanted to immerse myself in new subject matter, preferably with a stable employer that has an answer to the challenges of the future. Given my background in economics, I did have an interest in the banking sector. Coincidentally, I heard something about KBC's earnings figures in a podcast by De Tijd newspaper, which prompted me to take a look at the KBC job site.
I found my way there using a matching tool; all I had to do was upload my CV and I immediately received a list of jobs that matched my profile. I found that a really good way of handling applicants.
What jobs were you presented with?
Based on my CV, the matching tool selected a number of commercial roles. Some were still a bit above my level or didn’t match my interests as much, but it proved to be a good starting point.
Just a few hours later, I received an email asking me to take online tests. I was also contacted by a recruiter to discuss my CV and job opportunities. Besides the growth opportunities, it was also the values and work-life balance that convinced me.
How did the application process go?
I quickly received feedback on the online tests. I was then invited to attend a job interview with a sales coach. She said she would call me the following day with news, and she did. The colleague who was assigned to follow up on the contract proposal called me a few hours later. A week after that, everything was settled. There was no delay, but also no pressure. I felt properly valued.
Which job did it turn out to be?
I am currently a Trainee Expert within the Retail Academy. That means I’m being trained to help customers with their day-to-day banking, and eventually I’ll be taking up a role as an Expert in a bank branch. It fits well with my commercial background and gives me the opportunity to build a new career.
How are you finding your training?
It’s quite intensive. The Retail Academy training course lasts three months and combines theory and practice, albeit with a clear emphasis on learning by doing. There are e-learning modules and follow-along sessions with colleagues at KBC Live, but I am also expected to take ownership of my learning process. If I need help, I can always ask for it. Experienced colleagues are very willing to offer support. There are also regular coaching conversations, in which I receive - and give - feedback and am able to indicate how I’m doing.
Being given responsibility quickly, processing a multitude of information in a short time, taking initiative yourself... it makes for a steep learning curve, but it has to suit you. Personally, I find it motivating. I had already seen from the application process that at KBC you are challenged to 'come out of your shell' and show what you have to offer. The same is true in the workplace.
What is the atmosphere like in the Retail Academy?
Above all, there’s an atmosphere of eagerness to learn. I started with three other colleagues in April. That’s really nice because we can share experiences with each other.
I’ve also found that KBC is strongly committed to creating a good atmosphere and connection. Colleagues involve you in all kinds of things; there are teambuilding activities, lunches together, sometimes we meet up after working hours... Apart from the job itself, those things also mean you look forward to coming to work.
Have you already recommended the matching tool to others?
Yes, I have. I think its a valuable tool, and I’ve spread the word about it. Lots of people find it a scary thought to change jobs and reapply for new roles, even when they are really ready
