How did KBC play its sustainable role in 2023?
At KBC, we aim to be a sustainable business in the economic, environmental and societal sense. That’s why we’re strongly committed to innovating, going green and connecting, and why we also guide our customers in their transition to sustainability.
However, the road to greater sustainability is a long one with no end in sight, if only because the needs of society are constantly changing
and there will always be something we can do better.
Is KBC making an impact?
We are well aware that money makes the world go round. This truth also creates a golden opportunity: if KBC can direct cash flows towards a more sustainable purpose, it can steer the world in a different direction. And because KBC has so many customers – 3.9 million in Belgium and nearly 13 million group-wide – this has a considerable impact.
KBC sets the bar high for both its digital and non-digital business activities as far as innovation is concerned, continually looking for new ways to make life easier for its customers.
KBC does a great deal when it comes to connection, including financing and insuring nurseries, educational institutions, hospitals and residential care centres.
As regards going green, KBC continues to reduce its own environmental footprint, having already cut it by 68% since 2015. However, the environmental footprint of our core business activities is about 1 000 times larger, which is why it’s so important that we’ve set climate targets for the bulk of our loan and insurance portfolios, in addition to targets for responsible investing. Now it all comes down to meeting those targets and partnering with both private and corporate customers in their transition to sustainability.
What all of this (and much more) means in concrete terms for 2023 is explained in two brand-new reports: our Report to Society and our Sustainability Report.

The Report to Society provides a concise overview of how KBC played its sustainable role in Belgium in 2023. It is available in at www.kbc.be and a paper version is also available from our bank branches and agencies.
