What is accident insurance?

If you or someone in your family is injured as a result of a personal accident, bodily injury insurance protects you against the financial consequences. It covers the costs of medical treatment, permanent injuries or temporary incapacity for work, even if no other insurance provides cover.

For example:

  • Your child falls from playground equipment and breaks an arm.
  • You go for a walk or jog, sprain your ankle and need medical attention.
  • You slip on a wet floor at home and have to go to A&E for examination.

Accident insurance: the perfect add-on for your family insurance

Your family insurance covers loss, damage or injury that you or someone in your family causes to others. But who covers your expenses after an accident?

With our accident insurance, you’re covered if you or a member of your family is injured in an accident. The insurance covers consultations, examinations, medical procedures and other costs that are not or only partly covered by your health insurance fund or hospitalisation insurance. You get financial support for up to five years after the accident.

Everything you need to know about accident insurance

Medical expenses

We will cover expenses incurred for medical care and related expenses, such as those for special medical transport, up to an amount of 5 000 euros. A deductible of 5 000 euros applies,  which you pay out of pocket.

If you go for the VIP option, all sums are doubled, but the deductible remains 50 euros.

Permanent physical disability

If you suffer a degree of permanent physical disability of over 5% as a result of the accident, you’ll receive compensation that could rise to 50 000 euros. The amount of compensation you receive depends on the degree of disability. For each commenced bracket of physical disability of 5%, you receive 2 500 euros.

For example:

  • If your degree of disability is 50%, you receive 25 000 euros
  • If your degree of disability is 51%, you receive 27 500 euros
  • A physical disability of 67% or more is considered full physical disability, in which case you receive 50 000 euros

Death

If you die within three years of the accident, your next of kin will receive 5 000 euros. In addition, we will pay up to 5 000 euros towards the funeral expenses. If an insured child dies, we will only pay the funeral expenses.

There are various good reasons for taking out personal accident insurance. Take activity, for example. Most people are active in one way or another, whether at home or when we’re out and about. And accidents can happen anywhere, anytime. In situations like these, personal accident insurance offers extra protection.

1. Your child falls off the trampoline

Children love to play outside and sometimes accidents happen. They could fall off the trampoline and bruise or break something. If they don’t need to be admitted to hospital, the medical expenses are generally not covered by your hospitalisation insurance. This is where accident insurance kicks in.

2. An accident while doing garden chores

Doing chores sounds harmless, right? But accidents with a ladder or lawnmower can happen in a split second. You could fall and be seriously injured, leaving you needing physiotherapy and/or a long period of rehabilitation. The associated costs can quickly mount up.

3. An accident while playing sports or pursuing a hobby

A serious accident could happen while cycling, running, horse riding or pursuing one of your other hobbies, potentially resulting in permanent injuries. In some cases, modifications may have to be made to your home. Accident insurance helps you cover the high costs involved.

4. An accident during your ski holiday

Many accidents happen on the slopes every year. You could break a bone or require surgery following a collision or fall. In many cases, you’ll have to go straight to hospital or see a specialist later on. Accident insurance covers costs that are not reimbursed by your health insurance fund.

5. You’re getting on in years and fall down the stairs

Falling at an older age can have more severe consequences that might require long-term rehabilitation and, for example, physiotherapy, home care or medical aids. Accident insurance helps you cover the associated costs.

If you insure your children, all your children are automatically covered, including your cohabiting partner’s children. This applies to all children currently living with you or born in the future.

Children are insured as long as they live with you. If they move out, they will remain insured as long as they have no income of their own and are being supported by you or your partner.

If you’re not living with your partner, only your own children are insured.

If you also want to insure your partner’s children, please contact us to discuss your options.

If any of the following situations apply to you, you should make an appointment to work out the cost of or to take out your accident insurance.

Accident insurance has you covered when you’re injured as a result of a sudden event, such as a fall or collision. Hospitalisation insurance helps you with your medical expenses if you are hospitalised, for example, for surgery or in case of a serious illness. Family insurance protects you if you, your children or your pet accidentally cause loss, damage or injury to someone else or their belongings.
