Stress-free renovating: make technology work for you

Renovating is a huge challenge, but it becomes a lot more manageable when you use the right tools and technology. For example, there are all kinds of handy calculators for working out your costs and returns, as well as tools for keeping track of your budget, schedule and progress. We'll help you get started in three steps!

1. Make a realistic estimate of your costs

A detailed cost estimate is a great place to start. By working out the costs of structural work, insulation, windows, doors and finishing work, for example, you can see where your euros will have the most impact. You’ll also immediately see which premiums you’re entitled to, and even which jobs are best to tackle first. Be sure to include a 10-15% buffer for unexpected works so that your plan has the best chance to succeed.

2. Get quotes from contractors

This can be largely taken care of digitally as well. You can send photos to the contractor who will then provide you with plans and specifications, allowing you to easily compare the pros and cons of each quote (the brand of materials used, guarantees, lead time, payment terms, etc.). Be sure to make an overview of the status of all offers (requested, received, negotiated, approved). This way, everyone knows where they stand and you avoid discussions about the cost of materials or additional hours worked.

3. Link your estimates and quotes to a schedule

Divide your project into clear stages and check when each one is feasible. For example, do you have all the certificates and approvals required to start work? Is now a good time to start or is it better to wait until material prices drop a little more? Do you need to request another quote? By planning when to make these decisions in advance, you stay in control of your progress and avoid surprises.

Use data to inform your energy choices

By comparing figures on insulation, windows and heating, you can estimate the efficiency of different systems. Should you go for a heat pump, a condensing boiler, or would a hybrid system work best? By taking into account your requirements concerning comfort, acoustics and ventilation levels, you can make a smart decision while keeping the future in mind.

Wondering what calculations you can make and what quotes you can request right now?
