5 steps to improving your online security

What can you do to protect yourself from online scams?

1. Adjust your online banking settings to suit your needs

  • Keep your contact details at KBC up to date.
We can then reach you quickly if we notice anything suspicious.
  • Adjust your payment limits to suit your payment habits and lower them where possible.
You can adjust the limits for:
    • Your debit card
    • Your credit card
    • Online payments and credit transfers
  • Your payment cards include various features, such as contactless payments, that are turned on by default. Turn off the features you don’t use.

Tip: you can ask Kate how to do this.

2. Recognise phishing and online fraud

  • Read more about online fraud techniques such as phishing, romance fraud and investment fraud
  • Check out the ‘Surf without worries’ training modules offered by Safeonweb: Training modules | Safeonweb.
  • Stay up to date on the latest cyber threats and online fraud in Belgium with the Safeonweb app (available for iOS and Android).

3. Secure your device

  • Lock your device when you’re not using it. This will prevent others from easily accessing your personal data and applications.
  • Don’t install illegal or unknown software on your computer.
  • You should only install applications on your smartphone or tablet through Apple or Google's official app stores or the official website of the company offering the application (never via a link in a message or an alternative store).
  • Perform software updates as soon as they become available.
  • Make sure your own wireless network (Wi-Fi) is secure and limit your public Wi-Fi use as much as possible.
  • Secure your devices with antivirus software.
By using KBC Antivirus Software Package, you can secure all of your family’s devices for just 3 euros a month.

4. Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) for your online accounts

While you do need a strong password, this isn’t enough to protect you on its own. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a great tool for preventing hackers or scammers from accessing your account.

Two-factor authentication requires you to prove who you are in two different ways using:

  • Something you know (such as a password)
  • Something you have (such as a smartphone or token)
  • Something you are (fingerprint or facial recognition)

Some examples:

  • itsme® combines something you have (your smartphone) with something you know (your PIN) or something you are (facial recognition)
  • Logging in to KBC Touch with your card reader combines something you have (your debit card) with something you know (your PIN)

Use two-factor authentication wherever you can. Start securing your online accounts with the guides available on the Safeonweb website: Getting started – Safeonweb

5. Protect your current accounts with KBC CyberSecure Insurance
