What are the benefits of solar panels and a home battery?
- Save on your energy bill: solar panels allow you to draw less energy from the grid, saving energy and lowering your energy bills.
- Increase the value of your home: you improve your property’s EPC rating, increasing its value as more and more new buyers look for energy-efficient homes.
- Be less dependent on the grid: solar panels allow you generate your own energy, which can then be stored for use later with a home battery. You are then less subject to price fluctuations and you can even get money for any unconsumed energy you reinject into the grid.
How much do solar panels cost?
A complete solar panel installation typically costs an average of 3 500 to 5 700 euros, including installation costs and excluding VAT. The exact cost of your solar panels depends on factors such as the type of installation and the number of panels, while the number of panels you install depends on your energy consumption.
If you’d like a more accurate estimate of the costs, work it out now in just a few steps. That way, you’ll immediately know how much you’ll pay and how much you’ll save.
Are there any subsidies or grants for installing solar panels?
On 1 January 2024, the Flemish government stopped offering subsidies for panels installed after that date. This means you will not receive a subsidy or grant for installing solar panels.

FAQs
The price of solar panels may have come down, but they are still a major expense. You can apply to KBC for an energy loan to finance your project.
The payback period for solar panels depends on the cost of your solar panel system, energy prices, the amount of electricity your panels generate and your own energy consumption. On average, you’ll earn back the cost of your solar panels in eight years in Flanders and Wallonia, while you can recoup the cost of your installation in five years in Brussels due to green certificates.
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity which you can use to power your home. Unconsumed electricity is supplied to the grid in exchange for payment from your energy supplier.
You can also store your excess solar energy in a home battery for use later on. A home battery allows you to store electricity for several hours or even days.
You can store solar energy in a home battery, which is useful when your solar panels are generating more electricity than you can currently use. Any excess power first goes to your home battery, and once the battery is full, electricity is fed into the grid. If you need more electricity than your solar panels produce, you first use the energy stored in your battery and then electricity from the grid, but only when your battery power runs out.
A home battery therefore allows you to optimise your energy consumption even more effectively. It’s worth noting that the electricity in a home battery can be stored for a few hours or even days, but not from summer to winter.
A typical household consumes about 3,500 kWh of energy per year. If you install panels with a nominal power of 400 watts and want to account for future changes such as an electric car or a heat pump, you should ideally install 10 to 12 solar panels.
