The car is packed, the route is mapped out and everyone is looking forward to the journey: it’s time for an unforgettable road trip! Travelling by car offers amazing freedom, but don't forget that for many European destinations, you’ll need a few extras to drive on the roads. You may require an environmental sticker to drive in city centres, a road sticker, or a badge for making electronic toll payments (so you avoid queuing at toll gates).
France: electronic toll payment and environmental stickers
Bip&Go simplifies travelling through France
If you don’t want to queue at toll plazas, Bip&Go is the answer! You can use this handy electronic toll payment badge on all French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian motorways. If you’re approaching a specially equipped toll gate, you can simply drive on through and pay the toll afterwards.
Environmental sticker in France
While you’re in France, you also need an environmental sticker (Crit'Air) to drive through city centres. You provide your number plate and chassis number before being assigned a specific certificate. Please note that you’ll receive your environmental sticker by post. The sticker can also be used in Spain and Geneva.
The sticker is linked to your car and remains valid throughout the life of your vehicle. If your number plate changes, you’ll need a new environmental sticker as well.
Germany: environmental sticker and E-sticker
In Germany , you need a green environmental sticker to drive through a city centre. You should be aware that in addition to the environmental sticker requirement, there’s also a ban on diesel vehicles in cities and on motorways, so check all the details thoroughly before setting off!
If you’re only driving on the motorways in Germany, you don't need an environmental sticker. The sticker is linked to your number plate and remains valid for as long as your number plate stays the same.
Tip: Besides the environmental sticker, there’s also the German E-sticker for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (if your vehicle does not emit more than 50g of CO2 per kilometre driven). While this sticker is not mandatory, it offers handy benefits such as free parking when loading and use of bus lanes.
Please note that the E-sticker does not replace the environmental sticker and that both can be used at the same time.
Austria: digital road sticker
If you’re planning to drive a car through Austria, you’ll need a digital road sticker. This sticker is digitally registered and linked to your number plate. You may also have to pay tolls for travelling certain routes.
You can choose between several options depending on how long you’re travelling (1 day, 10 days, 2 months or 1 year). Please note that the 2-month and 1-year stickers are only valid from the 18th day following your purchase, so be sure to order them on time.
Slovenia: digital road sticker
In Slovenia , you need a digital sticker for a passenger car (class 2A) and for vans and pick-up trucks (class 2B). This sticker is also linked to your number plate. You can choose between a 7-day, 1-month and 1-year road sticker.
Switzerland: digital road sticker
If want to use the motorways in Switzerland, you’ll need a digital road sticker. This sticker is registered for your number plate so you can easily drive through Switzerland. It does not include access to the Great St Bernard Tunnel.
The Swiss road sticker is valid for 14 months: from 1 December to 31 January of the following year (e.g., from 1 December 2024 to 31 January 2026).
